A creative look that embraces flora, fauna, landscapes and paintings

In Japan, celebrities are looking for her portraits. Her photographic works deal with themes inherent to Japanese youth culture, as well as – among other themes – goldfish and landscapes. Known for her style filled with vibrant colors, photographer Mika Ninagawa was born in Tokyo on an October day in 1972. She also works in the field of fashion and advertising. She has dealt with the making of music videos.

Her frames immortalize human subjects dressed in baroque clothes. Mika Ninagawa made her debut in 2007 as the director of the film Sakuran. Five years later, she directed Erika Sawajiri in a manga-based film, Helter Skelter. Daughter of art (her father is a theater director) and her mother an actor, she was born and raised in Tokyo, constantly immersed in highly creative themes.

Her creative expression also dealt with painting and acting, even reaching graphic studies. Embarked on a career as a photographer, Mika Ninagawa achieved clear fame in the nineties, within the broader context inherent in female photography.

Praised as an art photographer and filmmaker, she is represent by Tomio Koyama’s art gallery. In 2014, Mika Ninagawa was appoint as an executive board member of the Tokyo Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games of 2020. In same year, her web-series directorial debut was with Netflix’s Followers. Among her awards, in 1996 Grand Prize, 9th Shashin Hitotsubo Ten and in 2001 The 26th Kimura Ihei Award, Asahi Shimbun Publishing Co.
