LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE – Novel, by Laura Esquivel

like.water1.1Like Water for Chocolate, it is a novel by Laura Esquivel, a woman who devoted herself to teaching, writing works of children’s theater and film scripts. In her novels, she uses magic realism, ie a combination of the supernatural with the everyday. In the novel, the writer proclaims the importance of the kitchen as the most important place of the houses, raising it to source for knowledge and understanding of taste and desire. The book consists of twelve chapters (one for each month), which is associated with a recipe of ancient Mesoamerican tradition. The ingredients seem improbable and the consequences of the meals can be amazing.like.water2.1

The town of Piedras Negras is barely touched by Pancho Villa revolution. The Garza family is in the hands of matriarch Mama Elena exercising a ruthless control over daughters (Rosaura, Gertrudis and Tita small) and on home. Since their first meeting, Pedro and Tita are overwhelmed by a larger feeling of them. Unfortunately, due to an absurd family tradition, for her marriage it is impossible. For human will (and with the complicity of fate), she and Pedro will find themselves living under the same roof as in-laws, forced chastity and yet bound by a glowing sensuality. Like Water for Chocolate (Como agua para chocolate), it is a love story, in which the food becomes a metaphor and expressive instrument, ritual and invention, promise and enjoyment, a vehicle for an unusual erotic communion.
