masterpieces1.1Welcome in Seville, where waiting for you something about Pedro de Campaña (Pieter de Kempeneer). He was born in Brussels and was trained in Italy, but he is known to have been employed in the Cathedral of Seville, where he received the order from the monastery of Santa Maria de Gracia for this Descent from the Cross. His style includes elements derived from Michelangelo, but these are offset by original plastic qualities and a sense of drama. He has borrowed the structure of the composition from Raphael, from which he repeats the motives of scales leaning on the cross.masterpieces2.1 The Descent from the Cross (oil on panel, 320 x 191 cm, painted in the year 1547) for the Seville cathedral, it is a painting that anticipates the Baroque of Rubens, and was much admired by Murillo. Influenced by Bernard van Orley, Pedro de Campaña expresses itself through the sculptural power of the shapes, with livid and refined tones and intense ecstatic expressions. As you can see, the range of colours (brown and greenish blue) and the chiaroscuro, add to the dramatic feeling of the scene. The light surts on the lying bodies, with emaciated faces and the tears.a.MB logo
