HORIZONS OF GLORY – When a bell can save a city: Brno and the Petrov hill

brno1.1One of the strengths of this city is its compact historical center, almost completely devoid of traffic congestion in our cities. Corner above the old city of Brno, in the south-west we can find the most quiet streets of the whole city. All these roads embrace the Petrov Hill, the one where we’re going, walking for Biskupska. As you see, we have moved away very quickly from the noise and traffic congestion, because the top of this hill, where stands the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, gives us an amazing feeling to be far, far away from city center. Look at the cathedral bells, remembering that for a random fact that this Catholic city was not conquered – after months of siege, in 1645 – the Protestant Swedish army. http://ticbrno.cz/en

brno2.1We can get into the church to see the fascinating Stations of the Cross. Come on – if you want – even to Denisovy sady, to admire an incredibly vast panorama over the city, and on the plain. Walking around the cathedral, we will find an obelisk, along with many crouching lions. This is an important memory, that of the end of the Napoleonic wars. One of those horizons of glory I have seen the battlefield at Austerlitz (just outside Brno), but if you desire I can take you now, or between late November and early December when – as happens every year – in those places takes the reenactment of the battle.
