THE HANDS OF ELSA – Poetry, by Louis Aragon

louisandelsa.1He was born in Paris, inside an October day, becoming poet, novelist and member of the French Comunist Party. Dadaism and Surrealism inside the life of Louis Aragon. In 1939 he married Russian-born author Elsa Triolet, and she became his muse. During the second word war, he wrote for the underground press Les Éditions de Minuit, and was a member of the National Front Resistance movement. In 1956, Aragon supported the Budapest insurrection. During the last ten years of his life, he published Henri Matisse Roman and Les Adieux. He was buried in his property of Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines, alongside his wife Elsa. One of his poems, even for us, remember what never dies:

elsa.1THE HANDS OF ELSA

Give me your hands for the unrest. Give me your hands so that I dreamed, I dreamed of so much in my solitude. Give me your hands, because I can be saved. When I take them in my poor grasp of the palm and of fear, confusion and haste. When I take the defeat as snow, which escapes me everywhere through your fingers. Will you be able never know what pierces me, what upsets me and that comes over me. Will you be able never know what pierces me, and that I have betrayed with my start. What in this way says the deep language, this dumb talk about animal senses. No mouth and no eyes, no mirror image. This thrill of love that does not say words. You’ll never know what they think your fingers, a prey of them for an instant seal. You’ll never know what their silence, a flash will not know know. Give me your hands, because my heart will not comply. Shut up the world for a moment at least. Give me your hands, because my soul will go to sleep, because my soul will fall asleep for eternity.
