Although he was considered a controversial figure in his day, he is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Joseph Mallord William Turner, was born on 1775. He was an English Romantic landscape painter, whose style can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. Extraordinarily inventive and enduringly influential, he produced many of his most important and famous pictures after the age of sixty. She died in 1804, after having been committed to a mental asylum in 1799.
Peace – Burial at Sea (oil on canvas, height: 87 cm and width: 86.5 cm), it is a memorial to Turner’s friend, who died on board the Oriental on the way back from the Middle East.
