Hello, tonight I write to you from the island of Madeira, in the Atlantic, an earthly paradise, but without his Eve. The memory of our holiday in Sardinia is still very much alive in me, and I miss you, so much. From the terrace of the Hotel Monte Carlo – http://www.montecarlohotelfunchal.com/– in the heart of the city of Funchal, I’m suspended between the green of the tropical vegetation and the blue sea, for a vacation alone, in a strange archipelago, of which two thirds are strictly protected area, to protect the largest laurel forest endemic in the world, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the terrace of the hotel there is a swimming pool, what I now observe, you imagining, inside, happy.
Before you start writing, I opened my e-mail, but you were missing. Strangely, however, there was a brief email, from our friend Anna, what we have known in the central-western Sardinia. She sent me a brief poem – the greeting of the Sun, to the Sea – which I enclose to my mail. I am sure that those lines will be to your liking, and the certainty comes from my own observation: Anna loves the Sun and the Sea, in the same way your identical. “The sun, the first light, he smiled in the lips of the sea. It is mirrored in the bottom knotted golden flakes of intense beauty. The sea has spelled voice, shouting and stilled the waves, the sand still dormant. Always together, far away on the horizon greet the day, and bless the world.”
In Madeira – Â www.exploremadeira.pt – Porto Santo Beach was ranked as the eighth most beautiful beach in Europe. Calm sea and 9 km of fine golden sand. The archipelago encompasses the spring temperature throughout the year, and it is impossible not to live outdoors and wander around aimlessly on the island. For a better view of the coast, the hotel suggested that I take a nice boat ride, but not to the island of Porto Santo, because they are too far away. That island beaches, wild and semi-desert, with such boundless horizons that open the doors of any desire, can be reached by plane or ferry, and I would like to visit it, to gather in my travel notebook a memory to keep for you, when we meet again.
Last night I had dinner at the “O Tapassol” – http://www.restaurantetapassol.com/en/index.html – famous for its fresh fish. An old building in the historic center of Funchal, the recently renovated with lots of flowers and regional food, where you can choose the dining room on the ground floor, or the one where I had my dinner – a first-floor terrace with views of the old town – choosing from 10 different appetizers, 4 soups, salads, 6, 7 varieties of omelets, 4 species of crustaceans and 14 types of fish.
I felt alone, and you imagining beside me, I have chosen what you would have wanted, but for the wine was the waiter to come to my rescue, advising a SEIÇAL of the north of Madeira. That delicacy, had matured under the hills, in a very rich soil; it is light and refreshing, long finish, with flavors of pineapple and passion fruit. The wine? A good choice, the result of good advice. I miss you, why not join me?
