Stieg Larsson was Swedish writer and activist, whose posthumously published Millenium series of crime novels brought him international acclaim. He was the second best-selling author in the world for 2008, behind Khaled Hosseini. He was born August 1954 in Skelleftehamn. He started writing his stories and at the age of 12 he completed his first attempt to write a novel. Developing an interest in leftist politics, as a teenager he wrote inspired by his grandfather’s anti fascist beliefs. In his personal and professional life he was a feminist, but the fictional world he created is full of depictions of violence against women. By the 1990s he had become an expert on the activities of people involved in extreme right-wing movements in Sweden. He became a frequent target of death threats, as one of his country’s most vocal opponents of hate groups.
He has no possibility to see the success of his novels, because he died in 2004 of a heart attack, but his books are still on the best seller lists.
