Brilliant figure drawings and a new technique of oil sketching

AUGUSTUS JOHN 1/3 – Around 1910, for a short time, he was an important exponent of post-Impressionism in the UK. To become a painter and engraver he had studied at the Liverpool Academy and at the London art school. Thanks to his fame, in 1921 he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. He painted famous characters (such as Yeats and George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce and also Elizabeth II). AUGUSTUS JOHN 2/3 – He was born in Tenby, Wales. His first works were engraved by the drawing, but he continued to make portraits, characterized by a careful psychological analysis. He liked to portray members of his family (his wife, his mistress and his many children), and the characters of the Belle époque. Curious about the Gypsies’ lifestyle, he spent a period of nomadic life, continuing to paint in Ireland and Wales. From 1900, he began to exhibit at the New English Art Club, which became a member in 1903. AUGUSTUS JOHN 3/3 – As a warrior artist he joined the Canadian forces during World War I, painting portraits of soldiers. After the war his style seemed to flush, so he traveled a lot (especially in Spain and the Caribbean), seeking new inspirations. In recent years, he wrote two autobiographical volumes: “Fragments of Autobiography” and “Finishing Touches”. He had continued to work until his death at Fordingbridge in 1961.
