ARGENTINIAN LITERATURE – Adán Buenosayres, novel by Leopoldo Marechal

Born in 1900 in Buenos Aires into a family of French origins, Leopoldo Marechal became one of the most important Argentine poet and writer of the twentieth century. After a childhood full of economic problems, he became a teacher a high school professor, devoting himself to poetry in the twenties. Thanks to a collection of poems, he made friends with influential intellectuals. In 1926, he published poetry in a style influenced by European avant-garde. In the same year, he met philosophers and writers in Spain, and in Paris he met artists such as Pablo Picasso and Antonio Berni.

In 1927, at home, he started working in school, and two years later he received the Poetry Prize in Buenos Aires. Staying again in Paris, in 1930 he began writing a novel: “Adan Buenosayres”. In 1937, he dedicated to his wife the poems with which he won the National Poetry Prize: “Laberinto de amor”. In the 40s he showed sympathy for peronism, directing the National Secretariat of Culture. He died in 1970, shortly before the release of his third novel Megafón o The War.

Reading Adan Buenosayres, which he completed in 1947, Story describes journey of Adan, a poet performing a three-day periple in the geography of a metaphysical Buenos Aires. This novel, as if it were a painting with strong color contrasts, touches comic and epic aspects, with an astonishing language. Reading you find out, what the writer was thinking about literature: “Based on Aristotle’s Poetics, I thought all literary genres should be genres of poetry.”
