KUSUMA AFFANDI 1/3 – He was born in Cirebon (West Java) in 1907. He is known as a painter adhering to abstract expressionism, which is why his paintings are difficult to understand, especially from those, who look to the world of painting without seeking explanations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81MjkJhwkPU He was a truly prolific painter, who painted more than two thousand works of art. In terms of school education, he had reached high education until he graduated, reaching a kind of education obtained only by a few countrymen. He became the master of Indonesian painting, as well as the most famous painters also at international level, thanks to his distinctive pictorial style. At the age of 26 he married, and his daughter inherited father’s pictorial talent.
KUSUMA AFFANDI 2/3 – Around the 30’s, he joined the “Five-Group” (five painters, of which he was the leader of the group), which have greatly contributed to the development of Indonesian painting. KUSUMA AFFANDI 3/3 – Taking his paintings, he often poured the colors directly on the canvas, wiping his fingers, to feel the sensations of what he saw and perceived. He is known as a painter adhering to abstract flow or expressionism. In the 1950s, he held many personal exhibitions abroad and in 1974 he received the Doctorate Honoris Causa from the University of Singapore.
