This Australian writer has been twice the winner of the Booker Prize. Peter Carey was born in 1943 in Bacchus Marsh (Victoria State), and at the age of nineteen he started working in the advertising industry of Melbourne and Sydney. Devoting himself to writing in 1974, “The Fat Man in History” – collection of tales – was published. In 1981 he published the novel Bliss. In 1990 he moved to New York, teaching at two universities. In 2000 he won the Booker Prize with the novel “The Ballad of Ned Kelly”, a fictional autobiography of an Australian bandit of Irish origin.

True story of the Kelly Gang is a fictional autobiography of an Australian criminal (Ned Kelly) The novel is divided into thirteen sections (each ostensibly written by Kelly), with a short description at the beginning of each section describing the physical condition of the original manuscripts. Kelly is nothing but a monstrous criminal, a thief and a murderer. To his own people, the lowly class of ordinary Australians, the bushranger is a hero, defying the authority of the English to direct their lives. Indentured by his bootlegger mother to a famous horse thief (who was also her lover), Ned saw his first prison cell at 15 and by the age of 26 had become the most wanted man in the wild colony of Victoria, taking over whole towns and defying the law until he was finally captured and hanged. Here is a classic outlaw tale, made alive by the skill of a great novelist. Page after page, this representative of the adventurous epic of an entire continent, the protagonist of the book will let you know the Australian land in a very original way.
