MARGARET KEANE 1/3 – She created a unique, popular artistic aesthetic during the 1960s, though unknown to the public for some time. She was born on September day in 1927 in Nashville (Tennessee). She immersed herself in art from an early age, and had a penchant for creating characters with large, looming eyes, her distinctive way to paintin of large-eyed figures over the years.
MARGARET KEANE 2/3 – In 1953, she met Nebraska-born Walter Keane at an outdoor art market, and after their wedding, she helped her husband transition from real estate to the art business. Her husband, by the time the 1960s rolled around Margaret’s artwork had become a huge force in the market, earning millions. She found the courage and leave, divorcing Walter in 1965.
MARGARET KEANE 3/3 – In a radio interview, she revealed that she was the actual artist behind the famed Keane art. In 2014, Margaret Keane’s life was vividly dramatized in the Tim Burton movie Big Eyes. She continues to paint in her home in California, with her work presented at the Keane Eyes Gallery in San Francisco, which has been in operation since 1992.
