MAURICE DENIS 1/4 – He was born in a November day in Normandy, and its waters and coastlines would remain favorite subject matter throughout his career. He studied at École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. He believed that art should sanctify nature. MAURICE DENIS 2/4 – Inside a special painters friends (Nabi Group), he would be creating new forms of expression. He fell under the influence of the work of Paul Gauguin and Vuillard, Bonnard and Roussel. He carried out numerous church commissions, typically in a style that was tender and mild.
MAURICE DENIS 3/4 – The subjects of his mature works include landscapes and figure studies. After visiting Italy, he became greatly influenced by the works of the great Italian fresco painters of the 14th and 15th centuries. For him, every work of art is a transposition, a caricature, the passionate equivalent of a sensation received.
MAURICE DENIS 4/4 – His theories contributed to the foundations of cubism, fauvism, and abstract art. He said: “Remember that a picture, before being a battle horse, a nude, an anecdote or whatnot, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order.”
