PHOTOGRAPHERS WITH EXCEPTIONAL COURAGE AND ENTERPRISE – Steve McCurry: If you wait, people will forget your camera and the soul will drift up into view.

Scrupulous research, long journeys and exhausting expectations.

He has covered many areas of conflict, including Beirut, Cambodia, the Philippines, the Gulf War, the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and Tibet. His career was launched when he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled Afghanistan, before Russian invasion. After working at a newspaper, he left for India to freelance. Here, he learned to watch and wait. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from the College of Arts and Architecture, at the Pennsylvania State University. In the documentary tradition, he like captures the essence of human struggle. Recognized as one of today’s finest image-makers, STEVE MCCURRY is known for his evocative color photography.

He does not look for the flashing shot, but prefers photographs that tell the events of a wider context. His photographic approach is usually of an anthropological nature, because he prefers to capture images imbued with culture and traditions. Trying to identify the moment when experience is imprinted on a person’s face, STEVE MCCURRY https://stevemccurry.com/bio turns his attention to the human being.

He focuses on the consequences of war, showing what war impresses on landscapes and on the human faces. Telling disquieting stories of uprooting and desperation, his photos on the technical level are imbued with the vividness of color. During his travels, STEVE MCCURRY loves to capture the surprise. The secret of his work style is to immerse himself in the reality he wants to represent, camouflaging himself with it. He loves to capture the surprise that is painted on a person’s face, but only at a particular moment: when that surprise fades into familiarity.
