POETRY

BORN INTO THIS

Although he was never truly associated with Beat writers, his informal style and non-conforming literary approach has endeared him to readers of the Beat genre. He began writing at a young age. Then he gave up writing for the world of work and bars (not publishing, not writing, for nearly twenty years). Ten of those years were spent roaming from odd job, to odd roominghouse from the East coast, to the West. The other ten years, he worked in Los Angeles for the United States Postal Service. During that time, his life bordered on insanity and death (two prevalent themes in his writing). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR1nDc6E998 Charles Bukowski returned to writing the day that he quit the Postal Service. He has published, in various small literary publications, for over thirty years. Written by Bukowski, there are over forty books in print. Since his death, a growing number of books deal with Bukowski as a critical source and literary legend. https://www.amazon.com/Love-Dog-Hell-Charles-Bukowski/dp/0876853629/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

I MADE A MISTAKE – Charles Bukowski

I reached up into the top of the closet and took out a pair of blue panties and showed them to her and asked “are these yours?” And she looked and said, “no, those belong to a dog.” She left after that and I haven’t seen her since she’s not at her place. I keep going there, leaving notes stuck into the door. I go back and the notes are still there. I take the Maltese cross cut it down from my car mirror, tie it to her doorknob with a shoelace, leave a book of poems. When I go back the next night everything is still there. I keep searching the streets for that blood-wine battleship she drives with a weak battery, and the doors hanging from broken hinges. I drive around the streets an inch away from weeping, ashamed of my sentimentality and possible love. A confused old man driving in the rain wondering where the good luck went. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0JhSLzdC5I
