After 1978, the People’s Republic of China has gone through a liberalization of culture, which led to numerous forms of avant-garde and museum-based art. The recent period of rapid Westernization (but also the rise to global power), have shaped every aspect of Chinese life. Eastern and Western styles. As you can perceive, contemporary Chinese artists often grapple with convergence and upheaval, between tradition and technology, communism and capitalism. China is at once a uniquely contemporary and deeply traditional society. How do you select 3 individuals from a nation of 1.3 billion people? We like to you present our little cross section of artists (that currently work in China) and make really cool art. Influenced by German Expressionism, Zhu Jinshi producezhu-jinshi-1-1s abstract paintings whose surfaces are built up with thick, near-sculptural layers of oil paint, while Zhang Xiaogang draws on memory to paint portraits that fuse his personal history with the legacy of the Cultural Revolution.

A pioneering filmmaker known for his dreamy, ambiguous films? Yang Fudong, also photographs staged tableaux that carry his signature surrealistic aesthetic. Strongly influenced by Lucien Freud, Liu Xiaodong paints his intimate portraits spontaneously from snapshots of friends, family, and everyday life.
