PIETER DE HOOCH 2/3 – In 1655, he registered with the artists guild in Delft as an independent painter. Like many artists of the time, De Hooch also had a second trade: he worked for a cloth merchant. The early work of de Hooch was mostly composed of scenes of soldiers and peasants in stables and taverns, but after starting his family (in the mid-1650s), he switched his focus to domestic scenes.

The figures in De Hooch’s paintings are usually members of the middle classes who are seen at their domestic tasks, reflecting a virtuous mode of living.
