MASTERPIECES OF ART IN THE CENTURIES – Modern Art Museum /New York and Hermitage Museum / Saint Petersburg: The Dance, by Henry Matisse

Henri Matisse, a revolutionary and influential artist of the early 20th century (known for the expressive color and form of his Fauvist style). He had a major creative breakthrough in the years 1904-05. A visit to Saint-Tropez in southern France inspired him to paint bright, light-dappled canvases. Although his subjects were traditional (nudes, figures in landscapes, portraits, interior views), his revolutionary use of brilliant color (and also the exaggerated form to express emotion), made him one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

The Dance (oil on canvas, dimensions 260 cm × 391 cm), is a painting by Henri Matisse. However, there are two versions of this painting (and this is an opportunity: choose your special trip, into which to insert the entry into a special museum, where you can admire a masterpiece painted by a French artist). Do not forget, about this painting, that it is commonly recognized as “a key point of Matisse’s career.A version of the painting (made in 1909), is preserved at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, while the other (painted in 1910), is visible at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. The Dance, is a large decorative panel, painted with a companion piece (Music), for an Russian businessman and art collector. As you can observe, the painting shows five dancing figures, painted in a strong red, set against a very simplified green landscape and deep blue sky.
