Jubiabà earned Amado an international reputation, being hailed by Albert Camus as a magnificent book. The novel tells the story of the friendship, between a poor black youngster from Salvador de Bahia, and a candomblé priest. The novel examines the African-Brazilian culture of the state of Bahia, with much emphasis on macumba. It continues the theme of development of political consciousness among the working class from Amado’s earlier novels. The protagonist, despite the loves and adventures experienced, has to work as a longshoreman. These are tough times, and involvement in the general strike sees him starring in an unusual role of humanity, from which arise doubt right on the figure of the mythical guru Jubiabd (in contact with the past, but unable according to him, to imagine a different future).
