FICTIONS – Novel by Jorge Borges

He became blind by the age of 55, becaming unable to read, but his progressive blindness helped him to create innovative literary symbols through imagination. His works have contributed to philosophical literature and the fantasy genre. Jorge Francisco Isidoro Luis Borges, was an Argentine writer and poet. His best-known books, Fictions and The Aleph, are compilations of short stories interconnected by common themes. In 1955 he was appointed professor of English Literature at the University of Buenos Aires. In 1961, Borges received the first Prix International, which he shared with Samuel Beckett. In 1986, after the funeral, Borges was laid to rest in Geneva’s Cimetière de Plainpalais.

Fictions is the most popular collection of short stories by Jorge Luis Borges, often considered the best introduction to his work. Translation into English of Fictions in 1962, that led to much of Borges’s worldwide fame in the 1960s. Through his immensely influential collections Ficciones and The Aleph, these imaginative inventions display Borges’ talent for turning fiction on its head by playing with form and genre and toying with language. A fake country discovered “an encyclopedia Pirate”, and a fictional planet, “labyrinth hatched by men,” but capable of changing the face of the world. The Don Quixote of Menard. The magician who shapes a child in the stuff of dreams and discovers that in turn only a dream. The endless Library of Babel, whose shelves’ register all the possible combinations of the twenty orthographic symbols. That is all that is given to express: in all languages and that the extinction of the human species will survive.
