For those in search of history and spirituality , Rocamadour is a very picturesque village located on the Way of St James of Compostela .
Consists of two rows of old houses at the foot of a rock that overhangs the only way provided with fortified gates . A staircase of 216 steps – once climbed by pilgrims on their knees – leads to the plateau where the city of bishops which houses a museum of sacred art objects and ancient paintings . Salvatore below which is carved into the rock of sant’Amadour the underground church and the chapel of Notre Dame de Rocamadour , where it is venerated statue of the Black Madonna .
