His music contributed to the spread of the first radios when, around 1930, the samba began to be considered as part of the Brazilian cultural root. Despite his premature death, he is remembered for his ability to tell the everyday irony.
He was a singer-songwriter and guitarist, one of the most names in Brazilian popular music. Born in 1910 in Rio de Janeiro, he had started playing mandolin and guitar since his teens. With other samba musicians, he loved spending his nights in bars.

At the age of 26, he died of tuberculosis, after writing about 250 compositions.
