THE VEGETARIAN – Novel by Han Kang / Quietly writing and singing.

A story of ordinary people, among mediocre males.

In this city was born a famous Korean woman writer. The first Gwangju Biennale featured artists from 58 countries (exhibiting over 817 artworks). The theme “Beyond the Borders” conveyed a message of global citizenship that transcended divisions between ideologies and religion, race and culture. Founded in memory of the 1980 repression of the Gwangju Democratization Movement, Gwangju Biennale http://www.biennialfoundation.org/biennials/gwangju-biennale/ is Asia’s oldest biennial of contemporary art. The Biennale shows contemporary art under a theme (along with special exhibitions and various performances).

She won the Man Booker International Prize for fiction in 2016, for a novel which deals with a woman’s decision to stop eating meat and its devastating consequences. HAN KANG was born in Gwangju (South Korea) into a November day, 1970. She studied Korean literature at Yonsei University, begining her writing career when one of her poems was featured in the winter issue of the quarterly Literature and Society. As of summer 2013, she teaches creative writing at the Seoul Institute of the Arts, while writing stories and novels. She is also a musician and interested in art. At first she was not intending to sing, but her music director insisted she should record the songs herself. When she published an essay book “Quietly Sung Songs”, she released a CD with ten songs that she composed, wrote lyrics for and recorded.

This is a pervasive and unstoppable suffering, capable of making the protagonist the victim of the banality of evil, the one with which we all measure ourselves. In this novel, the crystalline writing of HAN KANG explores the beauty of forms of extreme renunciation, accompanying you in the chasms that open in everyday life. His family bothered his new intentions. Yeong-hye had a dream, from which his refusal to eat and cook arose. In three acts, there is a destructive path that also involves those who are close to the protagonist of the novel “The Vegetarian”. The narrative story takes place in Seoul. From the first pages, you will also have the feeling of being in a recognizable world where hesitations and fears, ghosts and anxieties seem to come out of the web of our lives. A story of ordinary people, among mediocre males.
