The anthropologist of American life.

THOMAS HART BENTON was born in a April day in Neosho (Missouri), where politics was the core of family life, but with his mother’s encouragement, he chose to study art. Rebelling against the expectations of his family he moved to Chicago, where he enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. For all the possible limitations of his mind and the disturbing effects of his processes, for all the contradicting struggles and failures, with his work he have come to something that is in the image of America and the American people of his time. In Washington, you can admire some of his work at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. From about 1912 to 1935, he lived and worked in New York City, but painting during the summer months on Martha’s Vineyard (Massachusetts). His Midwestern people and landscapes, are done in an style marked by undulating forms and brilliant colour. His main contribution to twentieth-century American art, might be his emphasis on images of ordinary people and common lore. THOMAS HART BENTON’S expressive realism, stands out for its shapes and bold use of key colors.
