IN THE JAWS OF LIFE – Romance, by Dubravka Ugresic

The author plays with the characters of her tales, distributing roles over a narrative stage, which is full of brilliant parody. The novel “In the Jaws of Life” it’s a patchwork novel. There are symbols and the novel begins with a “Paper Pattern” rather than a Table of Contents, showing how the text will unfold. What saves this postmodern novel is a writer no bound by preconceptions. The title novel, Steffie Speck in the Jaws of Life, charts the life of a typist for a lonely hearts column. The novel was made into a successful 1984 Yugoslav film. Dubravka Ugrešić is a post-Yugoslav writer, born in Kutina, a town in Croatia in the Sisak and Moslavina region, in 1949. She graduated in Comparative Literature and Russian Language at the University of Zagreb. At the onset of the war in 1991 in the former Yugoslavia, she was accused of being a witch of countrymanship, because of her anti-nationalist position, criticizing stupidity and war crime. This led her to leave Croatia, because she could not adapt to the lies of political and cultural life. Currently she lives in Amsterdam, she is freelance writer and collaborator of literary newspapers.
