TO THE LIGHTHOUSE – Novel, by Virginia Woolf

A book which follows the tradition of the Modernist novel, the one, where the plot has secondary importance to the psychological introspection of the characters. To the lighthouse is a novel published for the first time in 1927. In 1998, the Modern Library named the novel No. 15 on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2005, the novel was chosen by TIME magazine as one of the one hundred best English-language novels since 1923. The novel centres on the Ramsays and their visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland between 1910 and 1920. The serene and maternal Mrs. Ramsay, the tragic yet absurd Mr. Ramsay, and their children and assorted guests are on holiday on the Isle of Skye.

From the seemingly trivial postponement of a visit to a nearby lighthouse, the author of the novel constructs a remarkable, moving examination of the complex tensions and allegiances of family life and the conflict between men and women. About this novel, the writer writes that – up to forty years and over – she was obsessed with her mother’s presence, until one day, as she crossed Tavistock Square, she had thought of the lighthouse urgently. One thing aroused another. That effervescence had pushed to write a book quickly.

Writing, Virgina Woolf had given expression to some ancient emotion. She was born in London in 1882. She and her brother soon showed their literary inclination, also giving birth to the home newspaper, where they wrote invented stories. Virginia became famous writer and essayist, considered to be one of the leading figures in 20th century literature. In the summer of 1940, she published the latest work, while her depressive crises became more and more violent, with anxiety and mood swings, which in March 1941 forced her to fill the pockets with stones and took her own life by drowning in 1941 at the age of 59.
