MAURITS CORNELIS ESCHER 1/3 – He was born in Leeuwarden (Netherlands) as the fourth and youngest son of a civil engineer. He was enrolled in the School for Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem, but after one week he informed his father, that he would study graphic art instead of architecture. In his early years he sketched landscapes, but also insects (such as ants, bees and grasshoppers). After finishing school, he traveled through Italy, where he met his wife. Throughout the Second World War, he pursued his hobby by drawing, playing with architecture and impossible spaces. With his innovative works he explored echoing patterns, space and transformation.
MAURITS CORNELIS ESCHER 2/3 – Establishing a home in Rome, he worked on engravings and prints, that captured natural landscapes and architecture. He is one of the world’s most famous graphic artists. During his lifetime he made 448 lithographs and wood engravings (and over 2000 drawings and sketches). His art is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world. Apart from being a graphic artist, he illustrated books and murals. He was embraced by mathematicians and scientists, referring to much of his explored concepts around geometry, space and infinity.
MAURITS CORNELIS ESCHER 3/3 – The sketches he made in spanish Alhambra had formed a major source for his work. Apart from being used in a variety of technical papers, his work has appeared on the covers of many books. He is famous for his so-called “impossible constructions” (such as Ascending and Descending), but also also made some realistic work during the time he traveled in Italy. He moved in Laren in 1970, to his retirement home, in which he had his own studio. Later, embraced by both artistic and math/science communities, he died in Laren (Netherlands).
