BETWEEN HISTORIC PICTURES AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY SENSITIVE PORTRAITS – Hans von Aachen

VON AACHEN 1/3 – His surname is derived from the birthplace of his father: Aachen. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, his life and work bear witness to the cultural transfer between North, South and Central Europe. He was versatile and productive artist, who worked in many genres and was one of the leading representatives of Northern Mannerism. He moved to Italy in 1574, where he remained for about 14 years. The elegance, humour and sensuality of his paintings never fail to impress.

HANS VON AACHEN 2/3 – The combination of the Dutch realism of his training and the Italian influences (gained during his travels as an independent master) resulted into really unique painting style. He began painting in Germany, as a pupil of the painter Georg Jerrigh. He was versatile artist, who produced paintings of historical and religious subjects, genre pictures, portraits and allegories. His paintings were reproduced by other artists at the court of Rudolf II.

HANS VON AACHEN 3/3 – He was active as a copyist and worked in the workshop of the Flemish painter Gaspar Rem. His style ranges between an idealized style of painting (close to Roman and Florentine Mannerism). You can find his paintings in Alte Pinakothek (Munich, Germany) and Detroit Institute of Arts (Michigan), Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg, Russia) and J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), Kunsthistorisches Museum (Vienna) and National Gallery (London, UK).
