Lisa See is an American writer and novelist, and her books include also the novel Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. http://www.lisasee.com/ She was born in Paris, but has spent many years in Los Angeles (especially Los Angeles Chinatown). Her paternal great-grandfather was Chinese, which has had a great impact on her life and work. Two her novels (Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and Peony in Love), they focus on the lives of Chinese women in the 19th and 17th centuries respectively. In 2001, she was honored as National Woman of the Year, by the Organization of Chinese American Women.

In a remote Hunan county, a girl, at the tender age of seven, is paired in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she’s painted a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men. Lily and Snow Flower, send messages on fans, to share their hopes and dreams. Together, they reflect upon their arranged marriages, shared loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan https://www.amazon.com/Snow-Flower-Secret-Fan-Novel/dp/0812980352 is a captivating journey back to an era of Chinese history that is as deeply moving as it is sorrowful.
