REPRESENTING CHARACTERS, WITH BRUSHES AND COLORS – Anders Zorn, the painter who captured the personality of his models

ANDERS ZORN 1/4 – He was one of Sweden’s foremost artists. His fame abroad is founded mostly on his portraiture, where he had the ability to capture the personality of the depicted person. In Sweden his nude studies are very famous (as his genre pictures, which mostly depict people at work). As a young boy, he had shown an artistic ability drawing horses and human figures, which he carved in wood. At the age of 15, he entered the Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm.

ANDERS ZORN 2/4 – At an Student exhibition, he showed the water colour in mourning, which propelled him into the art world. The painting illustrates young girl in mourning. It was admired for its skilfulness, the way he painted that sad young face, under the veil. In 1881, he went abroad to study, trying to earn enough money to support family. He spent four years in England and Spain, but summers he always spent at home, in Mora.

ANDERS ZORN 3/4 – Emma and Anders Zorn spent the winter of 1887-88 in Cornwall. This was an artistic turning point for him. He began to paint in oils. His incisive ability to depict the individual character of his model, is apparent in portraits of prominent cultural personalities. During the summers in Mora, he painted extraordinary works, where light plays a decisive role. He moved to Paris, where he began working with the motif, he became renowned for: the nude depicted outdoors.

ANDERS ZORN 4/4 – Beginning the year 1910, he focused on developing his control of the technique. His painting was influenced by Impressionism, while his etching owes much to the Dutch Old Master Rembrandt. However, he is famous for his female nudes, for example by Girls from Dalarna Having a Bath, that you can admire at the Stockholm National Museum. Emma Zorn, survived her husband by 21 years. To honour the memory of her husband, she had worked to create a museum in Mora.
