LOVER – A novel by Marguerite Duras.

Marguerite Duras, was a French writer and film director, born in French Indochina on April 4, 1914. Her father was a school principal and her mother was a teacher. After her father’s death, her family had moved to Sadek, where the mother dies during a flood. She is sent to boarding school in Saigon, where she falls in love with a rich young Chinese. Leprosy, jungle, colonial society and nature are the indelible traces of her experience in Indochina, those that will emerge in her novels. To study law, mathematics and political science, he moved to France, never stopping to think Indochina, because the age of eight to seventeen, she saw the sun set among paddy fields, because she hates the mountain that anguish, hiding the sunsets. She dies at 81 for throat cancer. The last years of her life passes closed them at home. The only friend to stay close to stir up her last words: “It’s hard to die, at some point you realize that the things in life end. That’s all.” She is waiting for you in the cemetery of Montparnasse, where she is buried.

The love story – told with bare styling and ample digressions – is intertwined with the vicissitudes of life: hatred for his older brother, conflictual relationship with his mother and latent lesbianism.
