The story ends when the mother of the protagonist decides to leave Vietnam for France, bringing their children with them. The story of the meeting between Marguerite and the son of a wealthy Chinese. “But then one had told them. He told her he was like before, that he still loved her, that he could never stop loving her, that he would love her to death.” The story is that of a forbidden love for two reasons: the young age of girl and existing conventions (the difference of race and that of social class). Their relationship is opposed by the father of the young, but used by her family to find relief from poverty. The love story – told with bare styling and ample digressions – is intertwined with the vicissitudes of life: hatred for his older brother, conflictual relationship with his mother and latent lesbianism.
