Thanks to some features, the Kuttanad is the largest producer of rice in the south of India. On the coast of the Arabian Sea, dotted with coconut trees and a 17 km long beach, waiting for you Kovalam and Kochi, cities of a thousand colonial influences, and major hubs of commerce of South India. If you arrive on the second Saturday of August on Punnamada Lake (a pretty stretch of water), you will see unfold before your eyes a fascinating race boats, up to 30 meters: the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. This land of great attractions (like the backwaters, a series of large lakes, canals and rivers), where you can stop for a while, to discover Alleppey, a market town you will never forget.

Multicuisine in Alleppey? The menu creatively combines traditional Keralan and European cuisine, specialising in locally-caught fish. Chakara Restaurant, at Raheem Residency is Alleppey’s finest, with seating on a bijou open rooftop, reached via a spiral staircase, with views over to the beach. Great Indian food for dinner, which is traditional and yet not too spicy that it burns the tongue. We loved the local dish (the Alleppey fish curry), which they feature as their signature dish so you can get it any night of the week. A wealth of different spices that are just simply delicious. Put that with the Kerala rice which is so different from the usual basmati. This rice has a much bigger and softer grain. Like velvet!
