TRIP TO GYOR / HUNGARY – A good choice for the tastes of all people

The Vitruvian Man, is a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci. https://leonardodavinci.stanford.edu/submissions/clabaugh/history/leonardo.html That drawing, accompanied by some notes based on the Roman architect Vitruvius work, depicts a man in two superimposed positions (with arms and legs spread ), inscribed in a circle and a square. Over the centuries that image has become a cultural icon. That man perfectly proportioned, comparing the symmetry of the human anatomy with the symmetry of the universe, it is also one that every day you see, hear, eat, and you sense even when you are on holidays in Hungary.

Just halfway between Vienna and Budapest, a Hungarian city has its own distinctive atmosphere (Baroque and a little old-fashioned), and the air that you breathe is really special because – being timeless – is a valuable gift for qualunqueviaggio. In the heart of the historic center, two rivers flow into the Danube, surrounded by buildings that are born in centuries past. Gyor http://turizmus.gyor.hu/lang/en/ gives you leaning towers and Gothic chapels, cathedrals and bell towers, in a trip you will never forget, returning to its nearest airport, Bratislava. Győr (Hungary’s second richest town in historic buildings), can give to you all reminders of a special historic past, that invite you to take a walk in the centre of the town.

Things to Do and See in Győr? Káptalandomb, is home to the Bishop’s Cathedral, which ranks as a ‘basilica minor’, and the Bishop’s Palace. Initially the cathedral was built in Romanesque style, but today the building shows a Baroque character, with Classicist elements. It’s what’s inside which lures most visitors: the reliquary of St. Ladislaus I, king of Hungary. When his remains were exhumed and his skull was covered in silver. Király utca is one of the three most charming streets that connect Bécsi kapu tér and Széchenyi tér. As you can see it is lined with many historic buildings (a good example is the former Esterházy Palace, located at Király utca 17. The other two streets connecting Bécsi kapu tér and Széchenyi tér are Kazinczy utca and Szabadsajtó utca. Liszt Ferenc utca, is another great stroll. Starting at Széchenyi tér this street is home to the Old County Hall (Liszt Ferenc utca 13) and to the Zichy Palace (Liszt Ferenc utca 20). As you can observe, Győr is located at the intersection of three rivers, the Danube, the Rába and the Rábca, and another river (the highway M1 that connects the city with the capital), you can get to Budapest. Do not forget: Győr is well known for its ballet company http://evenice.it/en/ballet-company-gyor-ungheria (if you have time it’s well worth attending a performance).

If you want, you can come to dinner with us. We go to the restaurant Pálffy Étterem (Jedlik Ányos u. 19) http://www.palffyetterem.hu/hun/ it is an amazing quiet place with a beautiful view of the church opposite. Fast service after the ordering, nice waiters and friendly, and delicious food (normal portions, good prices), not forgetting that they offer a great variety of wine and beer. We need to eat – once again – the Wiener Schnitzel (is huge, lovely flavour). You don’t know what eat? No problem. The menu with pictures was translated into various languages with a good choice for all people’s tastes.
