HUNGER – Novel, by Knut Hamsun

Hunger, it tells the story of an unnamed vagrant who stumbles around the streets of Norway’s capital looking for food. The great shock that the Nordic literature procured in the Europe of the late nineteenth century, is related to a novel by Knut Hamsun, Hunger (published in 1890). A young writer, passes a period of winding reflections in the city Christiania, trying to survive with some journalistic collaborations. Various characters the skim, but his only companion is hunger. Visionary hunger, the young writer discovers the oppressive character of urban life, then he goes into the tangles of mind, finally, his anger explodes against a company. The so-called civil society accepts him to destroy him, engulfing him in fake mechanisms that cancel his individuality, along with his dreams and hopes. Those ideals of the hero are put to the test, to be despised and destroyed. “The lot of refuse, those promises in a low voice, the many ” no “, the illusory hopes of which I had nurtured for so long, retries, that every time they proved vain, had sapped my courage.” Knut Hamsun believed that modern literature should express the complexity of the human mind, nowhere is that philosophy more evident than in this stunning modern masterpiece, Hamsun creates a stunning portrait of poverty and a biting social commentary on modern urban life. We follow the vagrant in the story around the town and discover the true depths of his hunger. Hamsun is at his best in this classic of modern literature.
