A long and winding road – north of Tuxtla and towards Villahermosa – gives you beautiful scenery, but we are headed twenty kilometers further east, in San Cristobal de las Casas (the way we will stop in Chiapa de Corzom to see the Museo de Laca, and buy a bottle made from lacquered gourds). San Cristobal de las Casas was born in 1528, and owes its name to the bishop he wanted to protect the Indians from the abuses of the Spanish landowners.
