THE WILD ISLAND: Madeira, a dream in the green, a dive into all the depths of nature

256 euro and 19 cents. The cost of a scheduled flight TAP Portugal (roundtrip) – http://www.flytap.com/Italia/en/Homepage – does not include stopovers. Next to me, from Rome to Lisbon, I have no friends who I met during my holiday in Sardinia, but from June 29 to the July 6 (the duration of my trip into the island of Madeira), to remind me of you and the joy of your friendship, I can only browse my travel notebook, to observe some special photo shoot. From this selection of wonders – flying over Corsica and Sardinia – I want to get a poster to ship to your address, and I have already identified what.

The incredible color of the Mediterranean Sea, an intense cobalt blue, breath-taking, it reminds me of a time and a place, your face and your eyes of the color of green opal. The moment is one in which after you have dipped in the sea of S’Archittu, your face emerges from the water and you bring your hands to your hair, a large number of tiny pearls of water they give to your face a thousand reflections of a sunset June. In this picture, what emerges from the blue, it’s your overwhelming joy, but what is in your eyes has the depth of all emotions, those us donated the Sardinia.

To Terminal 3 of the airport of Rome-Fiumicino Airport, the flight of the 6:15 837 was slightly late to start, but at 08:15, landing at Terminal 1 in Lisbon, I have not missed the flight to Funchal and even the 204 euro and 20 cents, the price of the flight from and to the island of Madeira. Like the two previous times, as the plane began its approach phase to the airport, also on this occasion I keep my eyes closed and I hold my breath, because this airport is among the most dangerous in the world, due to a very short runway and the mountains that surround it.

Time passes, but what man builds traces – for better or for worse –  remain. The airport that I see today is different from what I remembered. In fact, the 1600 meters runway became 2781 to accommodate aircraft larger size, those necessitated by the increase of tourist flow. The new platform of reinforced concrete, the one that emerges from the sea like a strange shell supported by 180 pillars, has improved the level of dangerousness of this airport, but it is only when my feet are on the ladder-truck that I feel safe, while the wind of the Atlantic Ocean it reminds me of the old name of this small archipelago, the Savage Islands.

Madeira, Porto Santo and five other smaller islands – http://www.visitportugal.com/en/destinos/madeira – no longer have the amazing forest that covered the archipelago, but the Gulf Stream and the mountains have preserved the mildness of the climate, where the flowers and the fruits speak to me of the tropics, where the vineyards speak to me of good wine, of the Madeira. A legend tells that these islands were part of the kingdom of Atlantis, but what the Portuguese had discovered in 1419 was a reality paradise surrounded by dense forests. Surely you remember that I travel with light luggage, and it is for this reason that I and my small backpack we can afford – before of the hotel accommodation – a good meal, of course, with sword fish and bananas.
